ACCEPTANCE

A Lesson from Dr. Seuss

The word we have been focusing on this month is Acceptance. In class, we read two books that communicate this word and what it means.

First, we read Pink and Say by Patricia Polacco, which is set during the American Civil War. It is a heartbreaking story which tells of a friendship between a black soldier and a white soldier, and the struggles they endure together. This book really made us reflect on Black History Month and the struggles people go through because of racism.

We also read The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss, which teaches lessons about acceptance and prejudice in a manner only capable by this hilarious author. This book made us smile throughout, but in the end, the lesson spoke personally to each one of us in the fifth grade.
